Health benefits of Pomegranates, your winter remedy!

The pomegranates are in season!

I love this beautiful, sober looking fruit, full of benefits that we will need with the festive season approaching. With winter coming, some of our problems are aggravated, but no panic, the pomegranate is there for us. There is a down side: they are a nuisance to pare. It takes a bit of knowledge and know how to cut them, but the trouble is it all worth!

Have a look at this gorgeous colored fruit. Is the color red? or pink? Lets open them up.

Where do you start?

First of all, get dressed! Yes, get dressed: tie on your apron, the biggest one you have and be sure there is nothing uncovered because the juice will find this uncovered spot and stain it! and you know: fruit stains are difficult to get rid of. You got the message: paring a pomegranate is a messy job.

Now you can cut off a thin slice of the top of the fruit; you'll see paper thin yellowish meridians that divide the fruit in sections: follow one of this meridian while cutting the skin very carefully along this meridian, don't touch the berries. As you have split the pomegranates in 2 or in multiple pieces, your second challenge is visible: how to get all this berries out without cutting them up; the paper thin yellow membrane should not get mixed up with the berries because it has a bitter taste.

When the cutting business is finished, clean your knife, put it away and grab your kitchen gloves or latex gants, that is if you don't want stained nail beds and finger tops. Start handpicking the berries. Use the top of your fingers and your thumb but don't put pressure on them, do not crush the berries; try to get the berries out of their bed. You want them to stay whole without spilling the precious juice. Either you pare the whole fruit or you dig out how much you want or need, put the berries in a nice bowl, take a dessert spoon and enjoy.

Warning: the seeds inside the berries might taste bitter, chew them or squeeze out the juice in your mouth and spit the seeds out. The juice is deliciously refreshing with its own special taste, miles away from the ready made grenadine you might remember from your child hood!

Why it is worth the trouble

As I told you above, you went through all this trouble because the benefits are greater than the nuisance! As you are savoring your "work" know that your are getting vitamins and minerals, that you are protecting yourself from inflammation, cancer, high blood pressure and the more. Why paying for artificial enzymes to help your digestion when you can have the real ones? You can find all the benefits  on the internet, but here are some of them in a row: pomegranates

  1. provide you with vit A, C and some B
  2. give you: calcium, potassium and iron
  3. have anti-inflammatory effects
  4. reduce your risk of heart diseases
  5. lower your blood pressure
  6. are good for your joints
  7. are a natural anticoagulant
  8. prevent your arthritis
  9. have lots of anti-oxidants
  10. enzymes help your digestion
  11. are a protection against dental plaque
  12. prevent cancer spread

If after reading this you say: wow, I could use this, don't go out and get ready made juice! It is most likely full of additives, conservatives and added sugar. Be brave and buy the fruit. Look for unblemished fruits and choose the most colorful ones: the more color the healthier. The fruits in the picture are a bit blemished but they are a gift from friends who grow them in their garden. I know the source!

Pomegranates have a long season and they stay good for a long time, they don't spoil easily. Buy a couple of them and view the fruit as medicine in a nice and colorful package

Symbol of prosperity and fertility.

I have some Greek friends and they gave me pictures, cards, paintings and glass pomegranates as a gift, especially around New Year. How can a not even sexy looking fruit be a symbol of fertility? As you can see in the picture, the pomegranate has no flesh but only berries, that are actually SEEDS!
The function of seeds is reproduction! Every pomegranate contains 400 to 650 seeds. You get that much trees out of 1 pomegranate. You easily fathom why the pomegranate is symbol of fertility and prosperity.

When pomegranates are in season, flue season is not far away; I have a couple of flue symptoms and if I want to get better I have to get rest. Yes, 1 necessary remedy is to get rest. There are some more things you can do, but that is for the next post.

This is it for this week. I hope you all are in good health. Walk to your vegetable store and treat yourself and your family with pomegranates!

See you next week!

Why you want to go through the messy job of eating pomegranates! What to do the prevent the flue from not breaking through!

The pomegranates are in season!

I love this beautiful, sober looking fruits, but from a distance! Why from a distance? Because they are a nuisance to pare them. It takes a bit of knowledge and know how to cut them: the skin is tough but thin and you don't want to cut the berries because you don't want a mess, a colorful mess but still a mess.

How to proceed?

First of all, get dressed! Yes, get dressed: tie on your apron, the biggest one you have and be sure there is nothing uncovered because the juice will find this uncovered spot and stain it! and you know: fruit stains are difficult to get rid of  and pomegranates stain the more if that is possible. You got the message: paring a pomegranate is a messy job.

Cut off a thin slice of the top of the fruit, find a yellowish meridian and only cut the skin very carefully along this meridian, don't touch the berries. As you have split the pomegranates in 2 or in pieces, your second challenge is visible: how to get out all this berries without cutting them up; the paper thin yellow membrane should not mix up with the berries because it has a bitter taste.

Now you don't need a knife any more, the moment has come to take out your kitchen gloves or latex gants, that is if you don't want stained nail beds and finger tops and: you can start handpicking the berries. Use the top of your fingers and your thumb but don't put pressure on them as to not crush the berries; try to get the berries out of their bed. You want them to stay whole without spilling the precious juice. Once you have finished the pomegranate or you have a handful of berries, put them in a nice bowl, take a dessert spoon and enjoy.

My husbands cousin, who dotes on pomegranates and cleans them himself, gave us a plastic recipient with a lid that looks like a giant honeycomb. You divide or rip your granate in pieces, put the pieces inside down on the hexagons, take a table spoon and tap the pomegranates with the convex side of the spoon. It works but it still stays a hell of a job. Too bad I striked too hard and the honeycomb cracked.

Why am I telling you all this: because the benefits are greater than the nuisance! You can find it easily on the internet, but here are some of them: pomegranates

  1. provide you with vit A, C and some B
  2. give you: calcium, potassium and iron
  3. have anti-inflammatory effects

  8. prevent your arthritis
  9. have lots of anti-oxidants
  10. enzymes' help your digestion
  11. are a protection against dental plaque
  12. prevent cancer spread

If you really want  the advantage of these benefits, don't buy ready made juice! You don't know how the juice has been made and what additives they have added. Buy the fruit, look for unblemished fruits and choose the most colorful ones: the more color the healthier. and make the juice or eat the berries The fruits in the picture are a bit blemished but they are a gift from friends who grow them in their garden. Symbol of prosperity and fertility.

I have some Greek friends and they gave me pictures, cards, paintings and glass pomegranates as a gift, especially around New Year. As is easily to comprehend, the berries, who are actually seeds, are very abundant. I pomegranate can possibly give you hundreds of trees! There are between 400 and 650 seeds in one pomegranate. It is obvious why the pomegranate is a symbol of prosperity and fertility.

What to do to prevent the flue.

My post is short this time because I am having some flue symptoms: I am shivering, the shivers running along my spine and I am unable to feel warm. My whole body hurts and aches and moving is difficult and I am not charging energy. I feel very tired. I can not prevent it anymore but I can obstruct it from breaking through.

What to do so the flue won't break through!

There are some "if"s that I do and YOU can do to prevent the flue from breaking through:
  • if you take a lot of rest, lie down frequently and do only the most necessary household chores, you might not get the flue
  • if on top of this you pull on your warmest WOOL sweater, you might not get the flue
  • if I dig up my mink knee blanket, left to me by my grandmother and sleep on top if it, I might not get the flue
This is all there is to it. Do this for 2 or 3 days and you'll feel a lot better, maybe totally cured.

About my mink blanket, I get it that not everyone has a mink blanket; a good alternative is a sheep skin; before I had my mink blanket I used a sheepskin. Since neither my blanket or a sheepskin are big enough to sleep comfortably under it, I sleep on top of it!  Spread your sheepskin out on your mattress and pull your bottom sheet on top of it. You'll benefit from the animal warmth and you'll keep whatever you are sleeping on, clean.

If you don't have a sheep skin, sleep on a sweater, anything that gives animal warmth! A polar blanket /fleece or something polyester won't do! If you are not feeling well, you want  natural warmth to restore your health.

This is it for this week. I hope you all are in good health.

See you next week!

Bikers, get yourself a skull ! Stuck with green tomatoes? Read what you can do with them!

Bikers, get a skull and be protected on the road!

I don't know what it is but after creating leather Halloween jewelry, my mind kept circling around skulls. It might be the time of the year:  on 1 & 2 November we remember the saints and our beloved deceased ones and on the 11th of November, Armistice,we commemorate the end of WWI, when so many died in excruciating circumstances for the benefit of what? This year, November makes me pensive and reflective.

From art classes, I remembered the presence of skulls in paintings, especially in 16th century Venetian paintings as a memento mori (remember you must die) and as vanitas (futility of -, fleeting life) in Dutch 17th century paintings. Nothing new under the sun! It is a good thing to remember that after all we're mortals and we should make the most of our time.

When doing some research about the contemporary meaning of skulls I found out that bikers like the skull symbol, as a memento mori; when riding your bike, the only protection you have is your helmet and sturdy leather clothes; an additional spiritual assistance is hence welcome! And here comes a memento mori in the picture!

Have a small ritual before taking the road!

A skull tattoo does the job but a skull bracelet or necklace is less radical then a tattoo. A skull bracelet or necklace, you can take it in your hand, kiss it or touch your forehead with it. While doing this formulate something, aloud or in your head, ask whoever you believe in to help you and to be protected while on the road. Then pull the bracelet over your hand or the necklace over your head and off you go, serene and tranquil in the knowing that you're not alone and you're protected..

This way you create something solemn, a  small ritual, one minute of your time, (but effective if carried out with mindfulness,)  before taking the road. Of course the skull won't protect you, it's duty is to remind you of your precarious position, remind you to drive carefully and to ask whoever you believe in for protection. Nowadays we are so busy that a reminder in the form of symbol is welcome.

With this in mind, I created some leather skull bracelets, particularly for bikers but anybody can benefit from a "memento mori". This set of bracelets and 1 necklace has the additional benefit  of being all leather, no metal closures hence no metal allergy problems. A sliding knot permits you to pull the bracelet/necklace over your hand/head and adapt the size to your own needs. I used solid 3 mm leather cord and the skulls measure 2 cm in height, 1.2 cm in width, 1.5 cm in depth.

So the skulls will stay in place, I added a knot on both sides of them.

Below are 2 simple bracelets: the left bracelet has a leather cord, 1 sliding knot and  1 skull, the one to the left has 2 skulls, nothing fancy, but it fulfills the duty of the memento mori.

The necklace of course is the most efficient since you will wear the skull closer to your skin and you'll feel it more and whenever you look into a mirror, you'll see your skull. The skull measures 3 cm in height, 2.5 cm in width and 2.7 cm in depth.

My niece assists in emergency operations: "more than half of the operations are on bikers" she told me. I almost lost my sun in a heavy accident when riding his bike. Bikers, do yourself, your family and your friends a favor and protect yourself!

Green tomatoes in abundance

If you are like me and you have a lot of green tomatoes and I mean totally green tomatoes and you have let go off all hope they will ever turn red, here are some solutions to your problem.

Fried green tomatoes

Who has not seen this memorable, funny and moving movie? when you are stuck with green tomatoes, that's the first thing you think of. Before frying them, I looked in my cook books, on internet: no recipe. How difficult can fried green tomatoes be? I sliced them, fried them in olive oil but the green slices had no taste at all. It's up to you to try this out; maybe I did something wrong, I omitted something, if you know about this, please tell me!

Green tomato jam

My mother used to turn the green tomatoes into jam. She cut the tomato in pieces and boiled them with the same amount of sugar. I loved my mother's jam, exotic and with a little crunch; but I want to reduce our sugar intake so jam is not  an option.

Fermented tomatoes

And here is what I did with my tomatoes: I fermented them. The recipe is from "Fermentation for beginners" by Drakes Press, 2013 Berkeley, Ca, According to this e-book, fermented food is healthy because it is pre- digested and anybody with digestion problems will benefit from eating fermented food. Mind the salt of course.

How to ferment veggies.

It is really a no-brainer: slice or cut your vegetables, in casu  your green tomatoes, put them in jar that is tight closing, if you like, add other vegetables like ginger or what you eat together with tomatoes, add spices, whey, water and salt. I added basil leaves, nigel seeds, 2 cardamom pods, lemon juice (the recipe said lime juice but I only had lemons), black peppercorns, water and salt. If you don't have whey, add 1 teaspoon salt instead. Don't fill your jar too high, you should have 2.5 cm between the water and the lid. Leave it in the kitchen or any other room for 2 days, taste it; if you like the taste, store it in the fridge; if not, leave it in the warmth for a half day, 1 or more days. Keep in mind that the taste will continue to develop while in the fridge and will get more salty.

I forgot to add sliced onions but I have more green tomatoes in the garden, that will be for another batch. I could have added some garlic, the taste would combine tremendously with the basil, but you know the problem. I might add some to my second batch.

Experiment and try out

Start with a small jar and experiment with tastes and spices, the amount of salt, the exposure to warmth etc. It only takes a couple of days before your fermented green tomatoes are ready and enjoy! I'll experiment with fruit: we have lots of raisins from the garden. They are small and full of seeds, very hard seeds; I might ferment them, a small batch to start with and I can improve or alter when making a second batch.

When to eat them

You can eat them as they are with cold meat, as a contrast to cheese or smoked salmon, to spike up a hamburger, delicious next to fried chicken or fried fish; in Belgium we eat them with french fries to balance and brake down the fat; add some of the juice to your salad instead of dressin, and it is an alternative to vinegar pickles. So many ways to eat your fermented veggies.

Maybe you have a biker story to tell, I would love to hear it!
Maybe you have a recipe to ferment vegetables or fruit, share it here!

See you next week with more news.

Cute leather handbag. Bisons in Belgium, really? Fall pictures hunting!

I had a productive week since I last wrote you: we visited a bison ranch, I made a cute leather handbag and started painting the doors in our work space upstairs and went fall pictures hunting. First some pictures of my super cute handbag.

Leather handbag

I am a bit tired of designing and creating jewelry and wanted a different experience; I like diversity and diversification. My faux fur handbag turned out all right and  I was ready for a new bag challenge. (I am still pondering a bucket bag design of my own!) This sounds courageous but it took me a while before I actually put my hand on it. I know, I know: when you create something you shouldn't be focused on the result but having fun going your path; well, let me tell you this, I want both: fun while designing and creating AND a good end product.

I had my mind set on round (bamboo) handles to save me the designing and sewing handles on. You already know that pinterest is my craft dictionary and I spent hours and hours studying bamboo handle totes. But all totes were in fabric so for a leather tote I was on my own. I had a butter soft piece of beige leather, smooth as silk, with the drape of old and used linen. It looked not small to me but when I started measuring, my tote couldn't be bigger than 30 x 30 cm. From pinterest I knew that my round handle should be about 20 cm. I had a pair in dark brown  acrylic mottled with lighter spots  and a diameter of 18 cm: perfect. And to be super super safe, I made first a "specimen" in fabric before tackling the real one.

Since this is not a blog on handbag making, I'll spare you the details and show you the bag right away
Here is the result:

This handbag is perfect as a small city bag and will look gorgeous hanging from your arm, set off against a black outfit, it will upgrade your denim attire and when not using, it won't take up space in your closet. The tassels spice up the bag and are used to close the handbag.

Bisons in Belgium? Where!

We, my husband and I have been talking more than a year about visiting this bison ranch in Orchimont friends of us where talking about. At last, we went. It was a 2 hour drive and we where right on time for the guided visit. With a real wagon we made the tour of the property but I was mostly interested in the bisons, this prehistoric, mythic and fierce looking animals. Seeing this proud beasts in the open (I won't say "in the wild"), your soul is stirring, something is grabbing you and your imagination starts to work. You want to grab their woolly looking skin with both hands. I am very very thankful to have this experience .

Another reason why we (especially me)  wanted to visit the ranch is that in the restaurant, they cal lit "Saloon" they serve bison meat. I always have been interested in "tastes" and I am eager to try out different things. When we went to Norway a couple years ago, I had whale. It actually tasted more as meat than as fish but it has it's own special taste, not a very strong taste. I was a bit disappointed in the taste expecting a more gamy taste, seen the dark red meat, it tasted surprisingly equal to beef, maybe a bit sweeter.

I have been fascinated with everything  native American since a child. I've read all of Karl May's Winnetou and Old Shatterhand adventures. I read so many of them that at last I was disgusted. I never liked girl books: very boring, dull and unstimulating. Now I saw those beasts with my own eyes.

They have been rearing bisons since 1998, starting with a couple animals and now they have a flock. They sell the meat, serve it in their restaurant and have a bison project running in Billings, Montana, USA.

This brings me to the book: Butcher's Crossing by John Williams. The book is very very good and very good in describing the horror people commit without blinking an eye. It describes in a very observing way the landscape, the journey to the secret valley, the slaughtering of thousands of bisons and with nothing, zero as an end result. Frightful how people were and still are only guided by greed! Don't read it if you are faint at heart.

Autumn colors

Whenever I see autumn pictures, I assume that halve of the colors are photo shopped! Last Tuesday the weather was extremely nice, 18° on the 6th of November! and we went photo hunting. All the yellows and reds made my blood go faster. And yes, the pictures I show you are not photo shopped, the yellows and the reds were there! I captured them as I've seen them. I merely adjusted the horizon in some of the pictures. A lake always gives smart pictures and the tall trees give a cathedral like feeling.

Does nature give us this strong colors, this exuberance of shades and tinges so we can get through the blandness and hardships of winter? as a memory to fall back on during the long and dark nights?

When admiring all this beauty, this stark colors I think: yes fall is my season but then comes spring to my mind with its tenderness, the soft hues and best of all: the knowing that winter is over. What is your favorite season and why? Tell us, please!

See you next week!

Fashionista, revamp and grade up your rain coat! Need napkin rings, here's how to make them! Find your feel good tree. A quote for you!

Fashionista, revamp!

In fact I am not a real fashionista. At the beginning of a season I go to the bookshop and take my time to choose some fashion magazines. When home, I choose a free half hour, make myself a coffee, sit in a comfortable chair, choose a magazine and brows through it without reading. I make a mental note of what I like and maybe I might get myself something new. Way back, when I was young, I was a consumer but now that I am 65, I' ve seen it all, everything comes back in a more modern, sleeker way.

I like the faux fur trend because it adds some splash and punch, gives an exotic touch to your outfit. I have a silk hand printed leopard scarf for some years that I treasure and wear it all the time now; gives my raincoat my white blouse a boost. But I wanted a new item, something small not a jacket or a coat. I was thinking of this yesterday while I had some errands to do; looking at the window displays nothing caught my eye or smiled to me and then it downed: I can revamp or upgrade my coat with a leopard belt!

Thus I bought 50 cm of leopard jersey, cut off 12 cm lengthwise, made a tube out of it, turned the tube inside out and then, here comes the key point: I hate ugly going fabric belts and had no iron on stiffener. But! I found a very stiff band in my stock. I cut off 50 cm, introduced it into my tube and spaced it evenly to the right and left of the belts center. My new belt will stay nice and rigid at the back of my coat and I'll be able to knot my belt.

My rather plain coat looks a lot more interesting with it's new belt!

Napkin rings needed.

My sister in law can ask some intense questions as on my 65th birthday. Last weekend again; after the Lebbe-family commemoration in West-Vleteren I was seated next to her at lunch. She told me "about their decision not to use paper napkins any more but fabric napkins instead. But then you need something to identify who's napkins is who's! Napkin rings as in old times is perfect and maybe napkin rings is an item I could put on my to do list".

Back home her words kept repeating  in my head and a couple days ago I started the project. Now that I have my shelves, it is great to choose out leather: every tiny bit or big chunk of leather is at one place in boxes according to color or displayed on shelves. It so much nicer and quicker to work

I  decided to use a snap button to close the circle instead of studs. On choosing the leather for my sister-in-law, I went for bright colored leather and a bit of fancyness some fantasy as to not be boring.

For my brother I choose firm and nice brown leather, in 2 shades and used a kauri shell to adorn. I made 2 for each so they would have a choice. If they don't like them, someone else will like or need my rings.

Overuse of paper

Brings us to the problem of overusing paper. Since a couple of years, out of the blue all institutions that issues invoices are concerned about the number of trees that are cut down to provide us with paper, at the same time they continue shamelessly wrapping their products individually in plastic and carton. To me the real reason and their only concern is to cut down expenses and have the advantage of seeming politically correct but we, as a consumer, have to organize a new filing cabinet on our laptop or whatever digital device you use.

A feel good tree!

I was ironing this week and all sort of negative thoughts were going through my head. Really, it was just terrible and I was disgusted with myself. I know that negative thoughts are counterproductive and I know that I should change them into positive thoughts if you want to make your dreams happen. Of course I want my dreams come through but how to get rid of this black, ugly mood! Well, if you are in a mood like this, it is very hard to find a positive thought.

When pondering how I could feel happy now, immediately, I looked up from my ironing and saw the beautiful red beech tree behind our garden, already turning a deep and warm rusty color intensified by the evening sun. IMMEDIATELY I felt better, I felt happy: I was where I wanted to be: in a good mood!

Wow, what a revelation. I've read about this stuff and you can go on reading, as long as you don't apply consciously what you read and you won't get it and grow. That moment was a real shift to me, no it's more, it was a miracle. I GOT IT plain and simple.

When negative thoughts are creeping in, I let them be because this thoughts give hints about what I should work on and then it's time to let them go before they become dominant. I have a look at my tree or bring the tree before my eyes and I am feeling better.

So: whenever you have negative thoughts, look at something beautiful, it doesn't matter what, as long as you're moved by it and you'll feel a lot better.

Your feel good tree could be as simple as a stone you keep in your pocket, a melody you call up in your head, a nice memory, a picture, anything.

And then, your negative thoughts shift to positive one's. Therefore, surround yourselve with beautiful things: they have to power to lift up your spirits, passively by just being there and actively when you direct your look at a beautiful object.

Quote

To end this post I have a very good quote for you. When reading Jen Mazer's Manifesting made easy..., I came across this sublime quote of Eleonara Roosevelt. I want to share this quote with you, it is so amazing and if we apply it, we can have a more interesting and fulfilling life; aren't we all into this goal?

Tell me if you did something to revamp or upgrade an old but treasured and beloved outfit. What did you do? how did you do it? I am curious!

That's all for this week. See you next week!
